- Accumulated contributions: means the sum of all the amounts credited to a member's individual account, together with regular interest on the account. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 3 Sec. 701
- Actuarial equivalent: means an amount of equal value when computed at the discount rate contained in actuarial assumptions adopted by the board of trustees. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 3 Sec. 701
- Adjourn: A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
- Adult: means a person who has attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
- Advertisement: means all representations disseminated in any manner or by any means, other than by labeling, for the purpose of inducing, or which are likely to induce, directly or indirectly, the purchase of food. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2152
- Advice and consent: Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate, and international treaties become effective only when the Senate approves them by a two-thirds vote.
- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Affiliate: means any company that controls, is controlled by, or is under common control with another company. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
- Agency: means a branch office of a financial institution at which all or part of the business of the institution is conducted, but the records pertaining to such business are maintained at another office of the institution, and not at such agency office. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-B Sec. 131
- Agency enforcement action: means an enforcement action initiated by an agency against a small business. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 90-O
- Agency of jurisdiction: means the state agency which has use of and jurisdiction over the facility. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1782
- Agreement of the parties: means the mutual agreement of the parties or their authorized representatives, and is distinguished from a unilateral condition imposed by any party to the agreement. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 2361-A
- Agricultural enterprise: means knowledge, skill or labor applied to growing or raising plants or animals, harvesting plants or growing or obtaining plant or animal by-products, includes forestry and aquaculture and includes production, processing, storing, packaging or marketing products derived from agricultural enterprise. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
- Agricultural land: means land capable of supporting commercial farming and forestry production. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
- Aircraft: means a machine or device designed for flight. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
- Allegation: something that someone says happened.
- Amenable species: means a species of exotic animal, as defined by the federal acts, the anatomy and biology of which are substantially the same as an animal that is currently inspected. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2511
- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
- Animal food manufacturer: means a person engaged in the business of preparing animal food, including poultry food, derived wholly or in part from livestock or poultry carcasses or parts or products of carcasses. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2511
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Antlerless moose: means a moose without antlers. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
- Appellate: About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
- Application and service fees: means the amount of money charged for the cost of application, servicing or technical assistance. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 963-A
- Aquarium: means an enclosed container used in importing, possessing or displaying nonnative and exotic species of fish or other aquatic organisms that has a closed operating system, that is located within a home, exhibition building or other permanent all-season structure and that does not allow the discharge of water or aquatic organisms into the inland waters of the State. - Archery equipment: means a bow or crossbow. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Artificial lure: includes , but is not limited to, artificial flies, spinners, spoons, poppers, plugs, jigs and plastic, rubber or other artificial imitations of natural bait. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001
- Assisted reproduction: means a method of causing pregnancy other than sexual intercourse and includes but is not limited to:

See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 10001 Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings. Baseline: Projection of the receipts, outlays, and other budget amounts that would ensue in the future without any change in existing policy. Baseline projections are used to gauge the extent to which proposed legislation, if enacted into law, would alter current spending and revenue levels. Bear bait: means an animal or plant or derivative of an animal or plant used to attract bear.
