(1) As used in this section:
Terms Used In Utah Code 41-1a-232
- Fleet: means one or more commercial vehicles. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
- Motor vehicle: means a self-propelled vehicle intended primarily for use and operation on the highways. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
- Owner: means a person, other than a lienholder, holding title to a vehicle, vessel, or outboard motor whether or not the vehicle, vessel, or outboard motor is subject to a security interest. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
- Registration: means a document issued by a jurisdiction that allows operation of a vehicle or vessel on the highways or waters of this state for the time period for which the registration is valid and that is evidence of compliance with the registration requirements of the jurisdiction. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
- Vehicle: includes a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, off-highway vehicle, camper, park model recreational vehicle, manufactured home, and mobile home. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
(1)(a) “Rental agreement” has the same meaning as defined in Section 31A-22-311.
(1)(b) “Rental company” has the same meaning as defined in Section 31A-22-311.
(1)(c) “Rental fleet” means more than 25 motor vehicles that are:
(1)(c)(i) owned by a rental company;
(1)(c)(ii) offered for rental without a hired driver through a rental agreement; and
(1)(c)(iii) designated by the registered owner of the motor vehicle as a rental fleet vehicle at the time of registration.

(2)(a) An owner that registers a motor vehicle under Section 41-1a-215 or 41-1a-215.5 may obtain an alternative special registration card and registration decals for the license plates if the motor vehicle is:
(2)(a)(i)
(2)(a)(i)(A) owned by a rental company; and
(2)(a)(i)(B) maintained in the rental company’s rental fleet; or
(2)(a)(ii) owned or leased as part of a commercial fleet and is not owned or leased by a rental company.
(2)(b) The registration card and registration decals for the license plates issued under Subsection (2)(a) are valid for the life of the motor vehicle while the motor vehicle is maintained in the rental fleet or is part of a commercial fleet.

(3)(a) An owner that receives the alternative special registration card and registration decals for the license plates issued under this section shall:
(3)(a)(i) renew the registration in accordance with Section 41-1a-216; and
(3)(a)(ii) comply with all the prerequisites for registration or registration renewal under Section 41-1a-203.
(3)(b) Notwithstanding the registration renewals requirement under Subsection 41-1a-216(2)(b), the alternative special registration card and registration decals issued under this section do not expire and are valid for the life of the motor vehicle while the motor vehicle is maintained in the rental fleet or is part of a commercial fleet.
(4) If the registration renewal requirements under Subsection (3)(a) are not complied with, the registration is suspended or revoked.
