- Adjourn: A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Allegation: something that someone says happened.
- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- an insurance policy or a health plan: refers to an insurance policy or a health maintenance organization contract described in section 1 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 27-8-24.3-4
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.

- at-home postdelivery care: refers to health care provided to a woman at her residence by a physician licensed under Indiana Code 27-8-24-2
- Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Attorney: includes a counselor or other person authorized to appear and represent a party in an action or special proceeding. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Autism: means a neurological condition as described in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- autism spectrum disorder: means a neurological condition, including Asperger's syndrome and autism, as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. See Indiana Code 27-8-14.2-3
- Bail: Security given for the release of a criminal defendant or witness from legal custody (usually in the form of money) to secure his/her appearance on the day and time appointed.
- Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
- base premium rate: means the lowest premium rate charged or that could have been charged under a rating system by the small employer insurer to small employers with similar case characteristics and benefit design characteristics. See Indiana Code 27-8-15-4
- Baseline: Projection of the receipts, outlays, and other budget amounts that would ensue in the future without any change in existing policy. Baseline projections are used to gauge the extent to which proposed legislation, if enacted into law, would alter current spending and revenue levels.
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC

- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- covered individual: means an individual entitled to coverage under a health benefit plan. See Indiana Code 27-8-4.9-1

- long term care insurance policy: means an insurance policy providing coverage for at least twelve (12) consecutive months for each covered person on an expense incurred, indemnity, prepaid, or other basis for one (1) or more necessary diagnostic, preventive, therapeutic, rehabilitative, maintenance, or personal care services provided in a setting other than an acute care wing of a hospital. - new business premium rate: means the premium rate charged or offered by the small employer insurer to small employers with similar case characteristics and benefit design characteristics for newly issued health insurance plans. See Indiana Code 27-8-15-12

- Precedent: A court decision in an earlier case with facts and law similar to a dispute currently before a court. Precedent will ordinarily govern the decision of a later similar case, unless a party can show that it was wrongly decided or that it differed in some significant way.

- Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
- prostate specific antigen test: means a standard blood test performed to determine the level of prostate specific antigen in the blood. See Indiana Code 27-8-14.7-3
- prosthetic device: means an artificial leg or arm. See Indiana Code 27-8-24.2-4
- provider: has the meaning set forth in IC 27-8-11-1. See Indiana Code 27-8-5.7-4

- rating period: means the calendar period for which premium rates established by a small employer insurer are assumed to be in effect, as determined by the small employer insurer. See Indiana Code 27-8-15-13
- Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
- representative: has the meaning set forth in IC 16-36-1-2. See Indiana Code 27-8-22-3
- Rescission: The cancellation of budget authority previously provided by Congress. The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 specifies that the President may propose to Congress that funds be rescinded. If both Houses have not approved a rescission proposal (by passing legislation) within 45 days of continuous session, any funds being withheld must be made available for obligation.
- Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party.
- Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims.
- short term insurance plan: means a policy of accident and sickness insurance (as defined in IC 27-8-5-1) that:

- small employer: means any person, firm, corporation, limited liability company, partnership, or association actively engaged in business who, on at least fifty percent (50%) of the working days of the employer during the preceding calendar year, employed at least two (2) but not more than fifty (50) eligible employees, the majority of whom work in Indiana. - small employer insurer: means any insurer that offers a health insurance plan covering the employees of a small employer. See Indiana Code 27-8-15-15

- telehealth services: means health care services delivered by use of technology allowed under Indiana Code 27-8-34-5
- Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
- Tort: A civil wrong or breach of a duty to another person, as outlined by law. A very common tort is negligent operation of a motor vehicle that results in property damage and personal injury in an automobile accident.
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
